From the desk of the Commander-Jim Cronk
First, I want to thank the membership, the officers, the committee individuals for all of your fantastic
support this year. You all have supported the programs we initiated, especially with the lounge. Bingo,
and financial support of our veterans. Your unquestioning support and confidence in making essential
changes, enabled us to progress in a positive direction. Without that fantastic support none of the
progress could have been achieved. The one program that required several man hours to develop and
orchestrate was the Lounge Manager. We decided to establish the lounge as a business, place the
manager in charge of the lounge and make all the managerial necessary decisions such as, planning,
organizing, directing, controlling and staffing. The chain of command was changed and the lounge
manager became directly responsible to the House Committee and the profession rules and procedures
were established. Lori Cooper was hired for this position and she was the right person at the right time.
She completely rebuilt this lounge and established a positive environment that was outstanding for
workers and customers, a phenomenal accomplishment in such a short time.
Second, we are continuing to stress the growth of the following programs:
(1) Membership – It is estimated that membership will grow to approximately 300 more members
this fiscal year.
(2) Service Officer assistance to disabled veterans and their families.
(3) Expansion of the Health Career Education Scholarship Program with the VA Hospital.
(4) Providing better customer satisfaction for our various programs.
(5) Additional sincere recognition and appreciation for the volunteers that give up their time to
assist this chapter and veterans.
There are several other programs that we are involved with, but the one element that needs to improve in
is our treatment of each other. The one thing we have to remember is the first word in the name of our
organization is “Disabled,” almost every person in or associated with this organization has a disability,
whether it’s mental or physical. So remember, if someone makes a mistake, ask, if you can help them but
don’t criticize them! Remember when you wake up in the morning and you look into the mirror, ask that
person that is looking at you “Have you ever made a mistake in your life?” If that person says “NO”, I
would truly like to meet that person.

From the desk of the Commander – Cont’d
Finally, I would like to place my name in nomination for Commander of Chapter #20 and finish the jobs
we started together. They are not completed and I would like additional time to complete what we started.
Thank you,
Jim Cronk
FROM THE D.A.V. 20 SR. VICE COMMANDER
As we start the second quarter of 2011, we have more activities planned for the Chapter and the organization, so be
sure to check your calendars for all the scheduled events.
The month of April will commence with the nominations for electing the new Chapter officers. It is imperative that
members attend the General Membership meeting to nominate and support the candidates of your choice. The final
nominations for Chapter Officers will be at the May 19th, General Membership meeting, which will be followed by
the elections which are at the June General Membership meeting, on June 9th.
The General Membership meeting for the month of May will take place on the third Thursday of the month (May
19th) to allow Chapter 20 to present the scholarship awards to student participants of the Health Career Education
(HCE) program, from the VA Hospital. This is another way that DAV Chapter 20 assists and is involved in the
community.
Again, I urge all members to attend the meetings and observe your Chapter at work.
Respectfully,
Ed Bejarano
FROM THE D.A.V. 20 JR. VICE COMMANDER
My goodness how time flies when you’re having fun, and I’ll tell you I have had a ton of fun as well as a lot of
wonderful people to help me along the way. There is no better time than now to sincerely thank all of you for
the support you’ve given me in my quest to serve you.
Once again all of the volunteers have been as always, fantastic and extremely generous in donating their time and
efforts in helping to accomplish our means, without you it couldn’t have happened. Thank you all for your support.
Once again we were quite busy this past quarter as we hope and expect to be in the future. Be sure to check out the
Blog on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/Disabled-American-Veterans-Glendale-AZ/104664462940971, for

As busy as we are we are still hoping to have a car show before the end of the year. Be sure to check out your
calendar for the all the up coming events.
Thank you all.
Respectfully
Arthur Thomas, Jr. Vice Commander

AND FROM THE AUXILIARY...
D.A.V.A. UNIT 20 COMMANDER
Let me first welcome all our new members that have signed up for Unit #20 Auxiliary. Our DAV
Auxiliary membership requirements have been amended by the National organization. Eligibility in our auxiliaries
has been extended to not only immediate family members of our disabled veterans but new changes make it now
possible for anyone related to a former serviceman or woman or active duty to join the Auxiliary. This would
include veteran’s extended family members. Some examples of extended family are, but not limited to: stepchildren,
step-grandchildren, step-siblings, step-parents, step-grandparents, uncles, and aunts, great uncles and
aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, sons and daughters in law, father and mother in law, brother and sister in law. If
you have any questions, please contact the Chapter for more information.
With these new changes, an order has been placed for updated Auxiliary Bylaws. Hopefully they will
arrive in the not to distant future.
Mid-term Conference for the State of Arizona, held here at our own chapter facility went very well and we
had a great turn out of Auxiliary members from around the State. Our Department Commander Cathy Price
conducted a well run and most informative conference. Thank you Cathy for all the hard work you put into this
event.
Our Department or State-wide DAV/DAVA picnic will be held on April 9th at Saguaro Ranch Park, 9802
N. 59th Ave., here in Glendale from noon until 5:00 pm. All DAV members, Auxiliary members and their children
are invited to attend.
Our General membership meeting on May 12th will be the first opportunity to have your name submitted
into nomination for office in the Unit. If you would like to get involved, come on out and see how and where you
can be of help. On May 26th we will have our executive board meeting, a week early, due to the State convention
4
(Auxiliary Commander Cont’d)
being held on our normal meeting night of June 2nd. Also in May on the 30th at 7:00 AM we will pay honors to our
departed veterans and their spouses at the National Veterans Cemetery. If you have a loved one at the cemetery,
you should join us and pay tribute for their service and sacrifice.
Our Department annual convention will be held from June 1st through the 4th at the Sheraton Four Points
Hotel located on the Metro-Center Mall complex. Visit our Department web site at www.azdav.org for more
details.
We are looking for old tea cups and saucers. If you have any available please let us know. It’s an
opportunity to clean out those old china pieces that just don’t seem to fit your décor any longer. Our Forget-Me-
Not luncheon will have an old fashion tea party as it’s theme. We need all we can get.
June 9th will be our final general membership meeting for the current fiscal year. It will be the last
opportunity to place names into nomination for offices in the Unit. Please plan on attending, your vote is
important. Come on down and visit your chapter on June 19th, we will be serving breakfast for the whole family in
honor of Father’s Day. Breakfast will begin at 8:00 AM.
Finally we must recognize June Millar who has celebrated 50 years of service to our veterans and service
members. At mid-term Conference June received a special Forget-Me-Not pin and certificate. June has cut out
over ten thousand dollars worth of coupons for our military stationed overseas and here in the States.
Congratulations June!

Chaplains Note
I looked at my membership card and suddenly realized that after 36 years as a member of DAV, I am
writing my last note to you. It has been a privilege to serve Arizona and Chapter 20 in a number of
committees and other State and Chapter appointed and elected positions over these years. As your
Chapter Chaplain this last term, I have toured the various wards and rooms at our Veterans Hospital,
delivered admission kits and reported on the sick and needs of our members. Membership in the AZ State
Ritual team at the Memorial Cemetery has allowed me to present Holy Bibles to the families of our
departing Arizona members.

Chaplains Note- cont’d
Age, Ambulation, Macular Degeneration and increased Hearing Loss now make it mandatory for me to
end these activities. Thank you for allowing me these privileges over the years. I shall cherish the
friendships, support and memories you have given me.
If you are one of our non participating members, give it a try. It is a wonderful and life fulfilling activity.
May God Bless all of you.
Bill Price, Chaplain, Chapter 20
Letter of Intent for Jr. Vice Commander – D.A.V. #20
I, Jeff Carter would like to place my name with the intent to run for the position of Jr. Vice Commander,
for D.A.V. Chapter 20.
Some of my qualifications are as follows:
(1) I have been a D.A.V. member for 22 years
(2) I have been a Past Commander twice at two different chapters, once in New Hampshire, once
in Mississippi, and transferred to Chapter #20 in Glendale in March of 2010.
(3) I am elected member of the Executive Committee, and a Bingo volunteer.
I would appreciate your support in electing me to the position of Jr. Vice Commander.
Sincerely,
Jeff Carter
And from the Adjutant and Bingo Manager
I would like to start this article out with thanking all of our Bingo volunteers and truly wish we could
encourage more of our members to come to the Chapter and help. We have some great volunteers and are
always looking for more. We have a great Chapter Home and we should be proud of it. Bingo is our
main fund raiser and allows us to support all of the veteran projects that we take on.
I personally would like to thank a few people for stepping and helping at our annual St. Patrick’s Day
dinner. I have put this dinner on for a number of years and it keeps growing, but this year I went into the
hospital for a little bit of heart work and so our Chapter Secretary, Toni Thompson, her husband Tom, and
the whole “Cooper Clan” (Lori, our Lounge Manager, her husband Kevin and their son Kevin) stepped in
and took care of it. Also, Auxiliary Jr. Vice, Jo Maxwell did an outstanding job in decorating. Thank you
all. I hope everyone enjoyed the food and appreciated the hard work that went in to putting it on. If you
missed it, you missed a good time.
Things are going well with the Chapter our Commander Jim Cronk is doing an outstanding job in leading
our Chapter and living up to our motto of “building better lives for America’s disabled veterans and their
families.”
Tom Henninger, Adjutant
